THE ARTS of HALLOWE'EN

Pumpkin carving, decorating ghostly cookies, weaving human-made spider webs, sewing costumes for little kids who want to be something the costume shop doesn’t have in their size . . . draping orange and black crepe streamers around the porch, inflating ghoulish organists and vampires to adorn the lawn, creating bewitching make-up to enchant Count Dracula, onstage* or off - so much decorating involved with the yearly festival of goblins and nightmares running wild!

Art?  You say - what has this to do with art?  If you prefer not to consider fantastical Hallowe’en outfitting as art, consider it design.  Commercial design and personal design. Design’s very much a part of art, some of it standardized, such as plastic trick or treat buckets molded to look like grinning jack o’ lanterns.  And a great deal is not standardized, too, such as all the fresh, real pumpkins carved so differently by so many different celebrants.

After the carving, though, comes turning those pumpkins’ pulp into pie - and that’s the Art of Baking!!  Not as elaborate as upcoming feasts, but maybe a warm-up for Thanksgiving dining (in not quite a month!).   And another art form, a talent shared by at least 99% of the population in circumstances of great revelry, The Art of Enjoyment!  Fairly easy to practice most of the time . . .

        Have fun!!
