Artist's Statement
My work, although abstract, is about place . . . places we’ve been and would like to be, would like to find. Viewers looking at my art have seen cityscapes where I didn’t intend to put them, and sunny gardens although I wasn’t (consciously) thinking of such when I created the work. Evidently environment influences me more than I realize!
I’ve lived in huge urban spaces, unremarkable small towns, and wildly rural farmlands - and found things to appreciate and enjoy wherever I’ve landed. My childhood cameras and 21st century digital devices have captured the beauty around me - towering buildings and sheltering trees, sunflowers glowing in an urban empty lot and carefully planned flower gardens - scenes that catch my eye as humans and nature created them. I don’t feel called to recreate those scenes as I paint & draw.
My art is meant to represent how I feel about the spaces I inhabit and imagine - most often to share delight that I’m able to pursue this freedom in the world of art, although occasionally a somber memory may inform the colors and tone.
