Art on the Road: April's Color Show

Cotton Candy Sky
Just back from two weeks in New England, and the early
spring season there is so visually diverse - striking white
birch tree trunks seem to glow in grey weather, and really
stand out in the stark, not yet blooming woodsy areas.
As far north as central New Hampshire roadsides and
rural gardens were flashing yellow daffodils, with a sprinkling
of white blossoms (dogwood?) and forsythia in the forests.
This year's heavy rains and snowmelt pushed mountain
This year's heavy rains and snowmelt pushed mountain
streams to run wild; Gleason's Falls' turbulence shot glints
of silver splashing water on a sunny day, while the rocks
below shone patent leather black.
While I was on Massachusetts' winding byways heading
west, the sky was a vibrant blue, with cotton candy clouds
every bit as fluffy as could be. Mountains alongside were an
array of browns and greys, with more lacy white treetops and
some light green showing up. In Lenox we walked at "The
Mount" on a chilly, blustry, drizzly day - the mansion still
closed, the elegant garden still asleep but for a few daffodils -
despite the wintry atmosphere, there was a soft rosy-tan in
the scene in freshly-laid wood-chip paths.
Heading south on Merritt Parkway in Connecticut a bit more
green was forthcoming - many young trees have replaced my
favorites that were felled in that horrible hurricane years ago,
but all trees are beautiful, and these will grow!

Past New Jersey a symphony of greens burst forth - no
paint company can ever supply all the variants, and I seriously
doubt I could ever mix the range provided by nature, either.
Looking out my window here by the computer, mesmerizing
is the only word I can use to describe how easy it is to get
lost in all the greens - all sun-dappled, contrasting with the
shaded ones, the fresh light green new evergreen growth
beside the dark greens, the glossy green of the baby volunteer
oak leaves beside the velvety yellower-green of the azalea -
Clearly I could go on about just greens - have I mentioned
how they stand out against the brown pine needle floor of
the driveway?! - but suffice it to say yes, green IS my favorite
color, and a springtime drive is guaranteed to provide me an
nature-curated show of infinitely satisfying art.
