Must I have a favorite?

Kate Landishaw / Comment on this

A gallery panel of jurors asked me recently which of my art is my favorite - and the question took me completely by surprise!  There are many opinions in the art universe about whether an artist should keep herself to one style and produce that repeatedly, or whether an artist should be an explorer, artistically wandering her mental and media globe, creating new visions as often as they arise.  Website advisors vary in their advice as well - if an artist does create several different families of work, should they all be on the website?

Since you're on my website, you can see where I've landed among these considerations, but I've sure never thought of which of my work I prefer to make.   The trees take me back to Paris, where they first reached down for me.  The Urban Jungles take me to big city parks, where I can hear the city sounds and see the tall buildings I love - while also enjoying lush natural landscape I love just as much.  As for the rest -  the fantasyscapes of floating clouds and intricate patterns against abstract painted backgrounds - I have no idea where they take me . . . although I find it both energizing and restful somehow.  Each group offers different satisfactions during the work, too.  Possibly why I pursue all of them?

Now, of course, I wonder why they asked which is my favorite.  My answer was honest; I told them I don't know.

Nor do I know how to decide.  This has pricked my brain, however; offered me an odd question to ponder.  If I ever figure out an interesting answer, I'll report it in this blog.  And if anyone visiting here cares to offer an opinion on the matter, I'd sure love to hear it!!!
